Our History

With origins dating back to 1843, the New Orleans Public Library has grown from a single French Quarter house with a few volumes into a city-wide system serving all of Orleans Parish with locations throughout the City.

Below is a "quick list" of opening and (if applicable) closing dates of New Orleans Public Library's facilities. The opening date is usually the date of the building's dedication, not necessarily the day when the building actually opened to the public.

East New Orleans Regional Library October 23, 1968 - Major flooding; demolished Temporary library opened in the Einstein School, December, 2007 (and closed July, 2009); temporary building opened on library site, October 5, 2009; rebuilt library opened April 12, 2012
Broad Library (now Rosa Keller Library and Community Center) November 19, 1993 - Major flooding; partially demolished Temporary library opened, December, 2008; rebuilt library opened March 16, 2012
Martin Luther King Library October 14, 1995 - Major flooding Reopened October 2007
Mid-City Library July 26, 2007 - - Temporary library at 330 N. Carrollton Ave. opened, June 11, 2007. Reopened at 3700 Orleans Ave., February 14, 2011.
