General Library FAQs

When are you reopening?
We do not have an official timeline yet for reopening the buildings. We are following the lead of city leaders and local health officials. Once that information has been determined, an email will be sent to all Library cardholders, or you can always visit nolalibrary.org for the most current status. In the meantime, please let us know if we can help you access e-Resources or other information online.

Am I being charged fines?
No. Any materials checked out have not and will not accrue any daily fines.

What are Library staff doing if the library is not open?
In addition to our contactless pick-up and drop-off services, we are providing virtual references services by phone and online, creating virtual programs, finalizing the details of our Summer Fun program, and working through the logistics of how our spaces can effectively function with the maximum 25% occupancy requirements of Phase 1.

Can I pick up my holds that were ready prior to the closure?
Yes. Holds that were ready prior to the closure will be available for contactless pick up beginning May 22.

Can I get my Library card number over the phone?

I don’t have a card. Can I make one over the phone? You can create a Library account online at getacard.nolalibrary.org.

This process will issue you a Library card number that begins with "PACREG..." With this number and the 4-digit PIN you choose to be your password, you will be able to access many of our e-Resources. Once we've reopened, you can stop in any New Orleans Public Library location to get your actual Library card.

  1. Click "Apply for a Library Card"
  2. Choose what will be your home library (you can change this later if you are unsure)
  3. Enter your zip code
  4. Complete the online form (remember to make your password a 4-digit number if you plan to use e-Resources)

I made a card online. How will I get my number?
After completing the Library account application, your new number will be immediately displayed on the confirmation page.

I would like to donate materials. Can I do that?

However, the Friends of the New Orleans Public Library are accepting donations BY APPOINTMENT ONLY at the Carriage House behind Milton H. Latter Memorial Library. To schedule an appointment, call 504-345-9563 or email friendsnopl@gmail.com. Materials that are left outside will be discarded.

What safeguards are in place with regards to items being reissued?
