As outlined in a 10-year strategic plan, the Library is working towards creating a Library Lifestyle for all New Orleanians by focusing on three pillars –– S.M.A.R.T. Kids, A Ready Workforce, and Open Doors. The Library Board approved the plan in May 2021. When voters chose to renew the Library’s primary millage in December, NOPL hit the ground running by forming an all new strategic programming team to address multiple points of the plan.
Whenever you pick up a paper handout from the New Orleans Public Library, there’s a good chance you’re holding Charles Delong’s work. Since 1989, Delong has been behind the Library scenes, printing every bookmark, every poster, every brochure, flyer, business card ––you name it, he printed it. Now, after 32 years of hard work, Delong has retired, leaving behind him a time capsule to the days long before the inkjet printer.
If you’ve ever exchanged materials through the New Orleans Public Library’s Interlibrary Loan service, you may have found a special trinket tucked into your items when they’ve come back – a doubloon. Those little slices of New Orleans are put there by librarian Jan Barnes, a 31-year NOPL veteran who has been at the helm of the Library’s ILL program for the past decade.
