The Library’s periodicals are among our most popular e-Resources. With your Library card, you can access hundreds of magazine titles –– including thousands of back issues –– through the award-winning Flipster platform. You can also enjoy free access to The New York Times, including the cooking and games sections. And, for information such as family histories, obituaries, and genealogical research, Newsbank and Newspapers.com are invaluable resources.
Magazines
Get free instant access with your Library card to the magazines you know and love from Flipster, EBSCO’s multiple award-winning, easy-to-read digital magazine newsstand.
Read current or previous issues of your favorite magazines on your desktop computer or mobile device –– via your browser or the Flipster app. Browse titles, search by keyword within a magazine issue, and even print from a desktop computer. So far this year, the top 10 magazine titles New Orleans Public Library cardholders are reading on Flipsterare the New Yorker, Consumer Reports, The Atlantic Monthly, People, Southern Living, Consumer Reports Buying Guide, Library Journal, Real Simple, Bon Appétit, and Architectural Digest.
Newspapers
Library cardholders can access current and historic newspapers through a few different avenues.
Newsbank provides a comprehensive collection of reliable news sources covering a wide array of topics and issues. Access content from the Times Picayune (1988-present), The Advocate (2012-present) and content from other regional and national papers. For archival material, Newsbank offers the Times-Picayune (1837-1988), New Orleans Item (1877-1958), New Orleans States (1916-1957) and States-Item (1960-1979). Browse issues by date, or search by any keyword, such as a name, event, or topic.
Newspapers.com by Ancestry is an extensive online database of 4,000+ historical newspapers. Featuring over 18 million pages ranging from the early 1700s into the early 2000s, this resource contains a diverse blend of well-known regional and local newspapers in the U.S. and other countries, including several Louisiana newspapers. Researchers can search by featured topics, or browse by state or geographic region to find marriage announcements, social pages, birth announcements, obituaries, local sports action, and news. Other features include the options to download and print, save to your Ancestry account, set up search alerts, and much more features are available. Introductory tutorials can be accessed on the newspaper.com homepage.
Did you know you’re Library card can even unlock free access to the New York Times? All you have to do is create a free account on, then log in through the Library’s access link for a free 24-hour news pass, or 72-hour pass for games and cooking sections. Please note that each section requires a different access link and redeem code.
