Staff Picks: What to Read for Poetry Month

Kathleen is a Pushcart Prize-winning poet and librarian at New Orleans Public Library. She recently served on the Stonewall Book Award committee for children's and young adult literature and is looking forward to a year of reading whatever she wants.

Happy Poetry Month, everyone! Last April, I recommended some of my all-time favorite poetry books for all kinds of readers, from the novice to the experienced. Those books are still available at the Library and ready for new readers to discover them.

This year I’m focusing exclusively on recent titles. While poets don’t really like for our work to be categorized as “hard” or “easy,” deep down I know that most readers would appreciate a heads up about just how difficult a book of poetry is likely to be, so I’ve arranged my new recommendations with that in mind. These books are all very different from each other, so if you don’t like the first or second one you pick up, try another!

Poetry Month is for sampling, and sampling is part of the joy of figuring out what kind of poetry you really connect with. There is truly something for everyone on this list.

Reading Difficulty Level: Easy/Accessible

Readers of all kinds can sink right into these books without help from anyone and they’re a great place to start if you’re new to the genre.

Reading Difficulty Level: Intermediate

For those who enjoy stimulating stories, smart takes, and surprising language, these books will meet you halfway, if you come ready to engage.

Reading Difficulty Level: Challenging

But so worth it! Don’t be intimidated; read these with a friend so you can discuss them over coffee, tea, or something stronger…
